Howling Owl is a boutique start-up focusing on hospitality. From roots in the events industry, we now focus on our bar and cafe in Godalming. With the Pavilion by Howling Owl, we've created an inspiring bar and coffee shop, serving barista made blue mountain coffees, homemade baked treats and a selection of leading beers, wines and spirits, and stonebaked pizzas (Thursdays-Saturdays).
WHO WE ARE
We've come a long way, and we've still got huge aspirations
HOW IT ALL STARTED
OUR STORY
We started with a problem. Most DJ booths are plain, boring, inflexible, and slow to set up. There’s nothing better than seeing your favourite DJ up close in a pumping venue, but there has to be something better than the mundane booth. Festivals get it right… DJs are poised in amazing structures like the Arcadia spider looking down over 10s of thousands of fans with bone shaking speaker systems. But there wasn't anything on a smaller scale. So we decided to create something visually impactful, you’d remember, that could create a party anywhere. We bought an iconic defender 110 with the aim of building a DJ booth for all types of events from weddings to music festivals and everything in between. But we didn’t anticipate what was around the corner.

As we were pushing live on our website and ‘the Howler’, our first DJ booth was being finished, COVID hit the UK. The events industry came to a standstill. We love nothing more than a challenge and we still managed to get the Land Rover out there. We did our first pop-up event on the Northcote Road and the feedback was incredible. So many people tried to book it on the spot. We knew we had something instantly.

Unfortunately COVID restrictions persisted for the rest of the year and all events were cancelled. But we still managed to support a cause close to our hearts, the Save Our Scene protests for musicians who didn’t have the government support they desperately needed.

Whilst the events industry was on its knees we had to think differently. In every challenging situation there are opportunities. One thing we knew about lockdown was that it made life a lot more local. People weren’t travelling. They were walking in local areas and the takeaway food and drink industry was growing exponentially. We love creating fun environments and showing people a good time, so we knew we could leverage that. We bought a coffee machine, baked some cakes, and took our Land Rover to a local park. Again we had something instantly. People loved the sense of community we created and it became a destination that people would plan their walks around, and eventually, one that fed the local community.
After that success we began talking to those involved with the management of the sports pavilion bar near our mobile coffee shop, which had been closed throughout the pandemic. They agreed that we could manage it temporarily, and then after a tender process we won the full term management, and have been managing it for over a year. Most recently we’ve been raising some funds from local people, sports societies, and suppliers to renovate the space to inject more life into it. It’s looking fantastic and it's become a place people can spend time with their family and friends exploring their passions.

Over the last year the events industry has also come back with a vengeance. We’ve worked with huge organisations like Jack Wills and Cancer Research, and big DJs like Joel Corry and Jax Jones. We’re incredibly proud of these achievements especially given the circumstances, and we think this side of the business also has a really exciting opportunity.

At the start of 2024 we took the decision to close the DJ and events production side business to focus all of our efforts on the Pavilion. We've got a lot of exciting things in the pipeline so watch this space.
